Workshop on the therapy of abused children

Workshop on the therapy of abused children took place on the 28th February and 1st March 2011 in Warsaw. The workshop was conducted by Anna Norlen, psychologist and director Child&Adolescent Psychiatry BUP Grinden from Stockholm. Representative of Child Well-Being Fund participated in the workshop on the invitation of Nobody’s Children Foundation (Poland). Two specialists from Lithuania (Children Support Centre, Vilnius) and psychologists from different institutions in Poland took part in the workshop. There were about 30 participants.

Anna Norlen presented aims of the clinicBUP Grinden:

  • traumafocused treatment (treatment for abused children and children who act against others)
  • centre for knowledge on Children&Trauma (trainings, supervision, development of methods for treatment, telephone counseling, consultations for colleagues)

Wide range of issues related to therapy with abused children was covered during two days:

  • features of traumafocused treatment
  • individual and group treatment
  • attachment&trauma
  • involving of parents in treatment

Attention was given also to some methods used for the assessment of psycho-traumatic event and child treatment (reconstruction using toys , free play, emotional cards, circle of feelings, special drawings, discovery of secure place). Large number of examples from practice and its analysis helped to better understand the features of psychologist’s work with abused children and their mothers.
